Costs of Study
Detailed costs can be obtained from the New Zealand Education: Handbook of Courses
and Costs (available from New Zealand High Commission or Embassies, New
Zealand
Education Centres and Education New Zealand) or request a list of tuition fees from the
institution.
Cost of Living
It is generally recommended that international students allow NZ$9,000 to $11,000 per
year for living (including food, clothing, transport, entertainment) and accommodation
costs. Most institutions in New Zealand will assist you in finding accommodation
while
studying in New Zealand.
Student Welfare & Support
Many institutions have International Offices which provide a range of services including
enrolment and orientation of international students and offer specialized student welfare
and support services. These services are available to students who may have
encountered
problems or are facing difficulties. Often specially trained counselors or designated staff
members will be available to help you with your needs.
Employment for International Students
International students who wish to work during the long summer holidays are permitted
to do so if they are undertaking a full time course of more than 12 months duration. You
will need to apply for a variation to your student permit from the local branch of the New
Zealand Immigration Service and pay a fee. (It should be noted however, that part time
work is not easily obtainable for students, and finding employment should not be an
expectation for those entering a tertiary institution.)
Postgraduate students may, on application, be granted a variation to their study permit to
enable them to undertake part-time employment during their studies provided the
employment does not exceed 8 hours per week and the application is accompanied by a
letter of support from the institution. |
